Inside the Mind of a Working Writer

Changing the method

It’s been interesting in this whole new endeavor where I am making plans to write a Young Adult series.  One thing seems certain and that is that the writers in this genre always have a plan.  They may not have the entire book outlined, but they have a beginning in mind and they have a general idea of where they want to go, and they make those plans over a whole bunch of books.  This is all new to me.

I have always been a write-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kind of writer.  I have a general idea of the story, but I tend to just open up my mind and let the story tell itself to me.  I have rarely used outlines in my fiction and I once got into an argument with an editor when she suggested I create a character bible for one of my fiction works.

Now, as I get older, I absolutely need the character bible.  I have been sort of collaborating with my fiance on this new project and it’s been fun.  We toss around ideas and write them out. We come up with names and origin stories.

I guess it just shows that you really can learn something new and do something new even if you think you’ve seen and done it all.  On to bigger and better things.
